The Truth About Yeast Infection
Yeasts are microorganisms which are eukaryotic classified in the fungi kingdom having 500 described species.
A few species of yeast like the candida albicans which are also called opportunist pathogens cause various types of yeast infection.
CANDIDIASIS
It is a kind of yeast infection which is caused by a group of yeasts. Nearly 20 species of candida is found and the most commonly found one is the albicans. They reside on almost the entire surface of the body.
They cause infection and when under certain specific conditions they multiply to become numerous in number. They generally affect the areas that are moist and warm in the body.
Various types of yeast infection are thrush, vaginal yeast infections, skin and diaper rash and nail bed infections.
The candidal yeast infections occur in the warm and moist part of the body like the underarms.
Our skin has a protective function to block the yeasts but penetration of these microorganisms occurs due to cuts in the skin.
Yeast also affects small babies taking the form of infections in parts like mouth and diaper areas.
The probability of yeast infection increases with the increase in age. In adults yeast infection takes place in other areas such as lower abdomen, breast, nail beds and beneath the various skin folds. But most of these infections are not dangerous and can be removed with proper treatment.
These infections do not usually spread throughout the entire body. But sometimes mere infections in the mouth and vagina can take critical forms and can be resistant to treatments. But in systemic candidal diseases 75 % of the people die.
Repetitive yeast infection can sometimes be a sign of severe diseases like AIDS, diabetes.
YEAST INFECTION CAUSES
In females vaginal burning, itching and discharge are caused by various types of yeast infection. Yeast are found to reside in the vagina of the females and they can overgrow if the environment in the vagina changes. Also the use of different types of antibiotics and steroids can be the cause of yeast growth.
Yeast infections can be developed during pregnancy, when suffering from diabetes, during menstruation and also by the use of pills that helps in birth control. These infections usually are more profound after menopause.
Sometimes these infections can be life threatening when the immune system of a person is weak due to causes such as cancer treatment, use of steroids and diseases such as AIDS. Also these infections can infect critical body parts such as the heart, eyes, kidney, lungs, spleen and even the blood. It has been found that the inflammation of the throat in cancer patients which is called esophagitis is caused by candida.
Also it was found that almost 15 percent of the people who have a weakened immune system develop systemic infections the cause of which is candida. Through cuts in skin or membranes these infections enter the blood of a person’s body.
These candida microorganisms can accumulate in an area because of the fact that the use of antibiotics kills those good bacteria that can keep these microorganisms in control. Also the use of devices which need to be implanted under the skin such as catheters helps the yeast in gaining access to the bloodstream in our body.
