Things You Should Know About Candidiasis

Yeast is a type of fungi, which is considered to produce a lot of desired and undesired effects. Thus, yeast affects every day human life a lot. One very prominent disease caused by yeast is candidiasis.

The Candida species of yeast causes certain infection commonly called thrush or Candidiasis. Oidiomycosis, Moniliasis and candidosis are various terms used to refer to Candidiasis.

Candidiasis includes infections that occur around the mouth, vagina and penis region. So, Candidiasis includes various chronic diseases like vaginitis. This disease can cause just some superficial infections and it can also become life threatening at times.

These infections occur around the mouth and nose causing irritation and pain. So, one needs to have sound knowledge about this disease and how to fight it.

Causes of Candidiasis

The yeast of Candida category is the actual cause of this disease. However, the growth of this yeast and its infection is somehow monitored by the immune system and the competition between different microorganisms.

Excess use of detergents in clothes and hormonal imbalance promotes the growth of such yeasts in and around the genital region. Use of contraceptive pills, pregnancy and sexual act make the genital area highly vulnerable to yeast infection.

Improper cleansing before and after vaginal or anal sex, can cause the growth of yeast around the genital region. This is because of the flow of fluids making the area prone to bacterial and fungal attacks.

Some people have a weak immune system; this is also a cause of Candidiasis. Diabetic people with excess sugar secreting fluids also promote yeast infection.  Conditions like cancer, steroid intake and HIV AIDs are ideal conditions for one to grow yeast infection.

Symptoms of Candidiasis

Candidiasis results in itching and irritation around the genitals. Due to vaginitis, irritation occurs across the vagina and around it. Sometimes white patches appear in the tongue and mouth region.

This is more prominent in children who are about 8 years old and below. This is commonly called thrush.  Infection of the vulva may also cause soreness and secretion of white coloured fluid.

In men, yeast infection appears as rashes and red spots all around the penis. Also some inflammation and irritation occurs in the foreskin of the penis. Most of these symptoms are treatable using the right drug.

Diagnosis of Candidiasis

Microscopes are sometimes used for diagnosing Candidiasis. Also, culturing is another way to observe yeast infection and take measure.

A small portion of the infected region is taken on a sterilized glass slide. It is stained well, and is put under microscope. Then, it is observed.

For culturing method, some microbes are collected in a swab from the infected region. It is then incubated at 37 degrees and is observed for yeast activity.

Treatment of Candidiasis

An antifungal is needed to be used to fight Candidiasis. Antimycotic a tropical clotrimazole, fluconazole, nystatin are used for the treatment of candidiasis. Infections in different areas need different dosing. In cases of severe infections, drugs like caspofungin or voriconazole are used.

Candidiasis has been observed to happen from long ago. It is highly communicable and can be life threatening. So, it needs to be cured as soon as possible under the able guidance of a doctor.

Facts about Candida Albicans

Candida albicans is a type of microorganism that is a diploid fungus that can grow both in the form of filamentous cell and yeast, and is the cause of various types of infections in humans.

These microorganisms reside in areas of human body such as mouth, diaper areas, vagina, nose, throat, intestinal tract.

The resistance to these microorganisms is provided by the immune system of our body. Once our body becomes weak these microorganisms can affect our body.

Candida albicans are found in various body parts like the mouth and are considered to be normal to reside there. Fungi are generally considered to be plants but unlike plants they do not have any chlorophyll as a result of which they cannot make their own food. They are found to prefer cold and moist areas and can be found in the air we breathe, moist water,   manure, dead leaves and fruit.

GENOME

A feature of candida albicans is the presence of numeric and structural rearrangements by generating genetic diversity and it is named chromosome length polymorphism. The phenotypic changes are caused due to karyotypic alterations. These help them to adapt to different conditions. These mechanisms can be understood well only by complete analysis or study of the candida genome.

DIMORPHISM AND HETEROZYGOSITY

The fact is that the candida albicans are polyphonic, although they are referred to as dimorphic. They undergo phenotypic switching which is a process that resembles dimorphism.

The heterozygosis in candida genome is much more than any other genome. Non synonymous single base polymorphism produces two different types of proteins that differ in their composition of amino acids which leads to different functions of these two proteins. And this results in multiple types of proteins encoded by the genome increases.

Candida albicans prefer human host. They can enter the body of a small child just after birth and their population is kept in control by the immune system of the body.

When the immune system weakens there is development of oral thrush in the mouth. Almost 90 percent of the babies are tested to have candida microorganism in them and as they grow the candida resides in the body.

Candida albicans resides in our body and these are balanced by many different types of bacteria in our body .When the immune system of the body is weakened and the balance of the bacteria is disturbed then they can have effects on human body. These effects are caused due to candida overgrowth and can lead to oral thrush, candidiasis, vaginal infections in women etc.

Presently there are many factors that can upset the ecological balance in the human body and can lead to overgrowth of candida albicans thus weakening the immune system and having different types of effects in the human host.

A few of these factors are listed below:

  1. Use of antibiotics, oral contraceptive pills that help in birth control.
  2. Taking food having high content of sugar and carbohydrate, consuming alcohols, or any type of yeast containing products.
  3. Pregnancy and multiple pregnancies also stimulate yeast overgrowth.
  4. Exposure to environmental molds for a long duration of time.

The Different Candida Symptoms

Many of the chronic diseases are caused by candida and it has become an epidemic to the society. Candida symptoms vary greatly.

Since most of the highly educated doctors are also unaware of its impact on a person’s health many common people are also unaware about its existence even. It has often been found that people who have grown this disease detected its presence after a long time and after visiting many doctors.  As such knowing about the candida symptoms has become necessary for its early detection and treatment.

Candidiasis is a disease caused by Candida albicans which is a yeast and has a natural habitat inside the human body in places such as the digestive tract, diaper areas etc.

The disease starts when the balance of good and bad bacteria in the human body is disturbed and the population of yeast increases leading to overgrowth.

These are the most commonly found candida symptoms:

  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Feeling too much of fatigue
  • high addiction to alcohol
  • abdominal gas accompanied with bloating
  • rectal itching
  • anxiety
  • vaginitis
  • too much fondness of sweet and sugar
  • inability to concentrate and lack of thinking power
  • mood swings
  • constipation and diarrhea
  • hyperactivity
  • itching
  • acne
  • suffering from depression
  • eczema
  • sinus inflammation
  • pre-menstrual syndrome
  • dizziness
  • poor memory
  • thrush
  • persistent cough
  • sore throat
  • acid reflux
  • earaches
  • low sex drive
  • muscle weakness
  • indigestion
  • athlete’s foot
  • learning difficulties
  • cognitive impairment
  • chronic pain .

EFFECTS OF CANDIDA SYMPTOMS

The organ which is most affected by the candida symptoms is the brain which is the most vital organ.

These also affect other systems of the human body such as:

  • digestive system
  • reproductive system
  • urinary system
  • cardiovascular system
  • nervous system
  • endocrine system
  • lymphatic system
  • musculoskeletal system.

Different persons are found to develop different types of candida symptoms and these symptoms are often found to move back and forth within the different system present in an individual.

REDUCTION OF CANDIDA SYMPTOMS

There are certain factors that are important for the reduction of candida symptoms:

  • limiting the use of antibiotics and only take antibiotics when it is absolutely necessary to do so (you must look for other alternatives instead of using antibiotics if practical)
  • the need to follow a proper candida diet in which sugar intake and carbohydrate intake in our body is restricted to a particular minimum level depending upon individuals
  • the environment should be kept healthy and non-toxic
  • restricting the use of chemicals also helps in the reduction of these symptoms
  • an effective method to remove the symptoms is the use good quality candida cleanse.

Today the market has a number of products that are useful in removing the candida symptoms. But which one to use is a very confusing question. But there is no guarantee of desired results.

So instead of using unknown products available in the market a proper understanding of the candida symptoms and indications are necessary. As such a thorough understanding of the complexities of candida is very much useful.

If a person has these candida symptoms he or she must consult a specialist doctor and undergo proper treatment if necessary.

The Need for a Candida Diet

The yeast Candida albicans normally resides in the body in the vagina and the digestive tract. The candida level can be kept to a desired level by the immune system of our body and also by the different types of probiotic bacteria that are beneficial to the body.

During the use of antibiotics these beneficial bacteria get killed or in a person having weakened immune system there may be overgrowth of candida.

THE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS FOR CANDIDA OVERGROWTH

There are several contributing factors that may lead to the overgrowth of candida.

1. Using medicine of different types such as antacids, steroids, anti-ulcers, oral pills for birth control or even repetitive use of antibiotic.

2. Diseases like diabetics and AIDS weakens the immune system resulting to candida overgrowth.

3. Smoking and high sugar diet can also stimulate overgrowth.

4. Food allergies and pregnancy can also contribute to the overgrowth.

The overgrowth of the microorganism yeast Candida albicans (causing candidiasis) can be reduced or restricted by taking a particular type of candida diet.

The Doctors have suggested a few guidelines about the candida diet that can address the overgrowth of the causative microorganisms.

AVOIDING SUGAR INTAKE

The growth of yeast is catalyzed by the intake of sugar in our diet. Also the carbohydrate that we consume must be limited during the initial stages (for two to three weeks) of the candida diet.

It may be restricted to an amount such as carbohydrate intake of only 60 g in a day. The restricted amount is often determined by the factors such as the activeness of a person, his age; health conditions also the degree of sensitivities to different food.

The food items having very low percentage of carbohydrates such as shellfish, meat, turkey, a few types of nuts and different types of non-starchy vegetables are often suggested. Then after some amount of time (nearly a month or more) the carbohydrate intake is gradually increased when the symptoms subside.

AVOIDING YEAST CONTAINING FOODS

Avoiding any type of fermented foods is also a necessary part of candida diet. As such foods like bread, mushroom, cheese, tomato paste, and beer need to be avoided. Sometimes it is also said that overgrowth of candida in also very much sensitive to fungi and as such those people having candida overgrowth can be allergic to fungi.

The length of time until which a person has the symptoms determines the length of the need for the candida diet. Also the severity of the symptoms is an important factor. The health condition of a person also becomes a deciding factor when doctors prescribe a specific type of candida diet.

The reports suggest that it takes a minimum time of about 4 weeks before there is any improvement after implementation of the diet on a person.  For a few individuals it may take a time of about a few months before there is any type of improvement such as disappearance of the symptoms. Once the symptoms starts to disappear your health provider starts adding food items in your candida diet plan that were initially not there.

More Information on Candida Diet

The Candida diet could really affect or change your lifestyle especially at stage 2. Candida is a group of yeast-like microorganisms such as Candida Albicans and they live in the human mouth, throat, intestines and genital or urinary tract.

Candidiasis or thrush is a fungal infection that is commonly referred to as yeast infection. The common infections are vaginitis, oral thrush, conjunctivitis, athlete’s foot, jock itch, canker sores, sore throat and many more.

There are many causes of Candida and those are poor diet, out of balance intestinal bacterial environment and weakened immunity. Another one is overuse of antibiotic because it destroys the natural flora of the intestines. Patients undergoing chemotherapy, AIDS patients, infants, diabetic patients are also prone to develop Candidiasis, as well as those people who are taking corticosteroids and contraceptives.

If you really want to get rid of this infection, you have to follow the Candida diet every day until your symptoms subside or until you are infection free. The first thing that you could do, especially during stage 1, is to do detox and in here, you are cleaning your system of the toxic byproducts of Candida. To do detox, you need to do fasting, colon cleansing, wheatgrass, fresh vegetable juices, plenty of water, detox herbs, exercise and anything that have antioxidant property.

You also need to reduce the number of yeasts in your entire system. There are a lot of herbs that you could take in order bring yeast cells back into balance. You could also take probiotics such as lactobacilli, bifidobacteria and acidophilus that could be found in yoghurt in order to maintain the balance in your intestinal flora and kill undesirable microorganisms.

Yeast wants sugar and simple carbohydrates, so you need to exclude from your candida diet foods that belong in these food categories. Examples of sugars are honey, syrup, lactose, fructose, sucrose, chocolate, molasses, rice syrup, artificial sweeteners, agave nectar, and coconut sugar.

These sugars will exacerbate your condition and included in here are soft drinks and even sugar-free diet coke because they can feed your Candida. When planning your candida diet, you can use Xylitol or Stevia as the best substitute for these sugars because they are very healthy and will not acidify your body.

Alcoholic beverages like wine, beer, spirits, liquors and cider are also high in sugar. These could not only feed your Candida, but they could also put stress on your organs and immune system. Condiments have high amounts of hidden sugars and examples are ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, relish, horseradish, salad dressings, braggs and aminos.

You must not include grains and glutinous foods such as wheat, rye, oats, barley and corn in your candida diet. Corns are highly contaminated with toxic fungi.

You need to avoid fruits, whether they are fresh, dried, canned or juiced because they are high in sugar. If you are in stage 3 already, you can reintroduce low sugar fruits such as apples and berries.

Pork contains retroviruses that will not be killed during cooking will weaken your digestive system, so you need to avoid all pork products. Cured meats like salami, pepperoni, pastrami and hotdogs should also be avoided, as well as processed meats such as lunch meat and spam because they are rich in dextrose nitrates, sulphates and sugars. Fish and shellfish should also not be included in your candida diet because of their toxins that could suppress your immune systems and harm your body.

Coffee will cause increase in your blood sugar level and they will feed your Candida. They also contain mold that will cause overgrowth of your Candida. Cashews, peanuts and pistachios contain high fungal toxins that could worsen your Candidiasis. All soy products are also not allowed because it can damage your immune system and could also disrupt your thyroid function and this will lead to Candida overgrowth.

Mushrooms like truffles should be avoided and must not be in your candida diet because it can cause inflammatory response if you have Candida, but there were some mushrooms that are safe for you to take and those are Reishi and Maitake. Vinegar is forbidden because it is practically made from yeast culture and it can also cause inflammation in your gut. There is vinegar, which is the unfiltered apple cider that is safe to take and is very helpful in fighting yeast. You should also avoid fats and oils such as peanut, cottonseed, corn and canola oil because they contain mold.

There are foods that could fight your condition and must be included in your candadi diet. The first one is the coconut oil, which is a potent killer of this bacteria. Another one is garlic and it has an antifungal property that will attack Candida, while boosting your good bacteria. Onions and pumpkin seeds also have antifungal, antibacterial and antiparasitic properties. There were still many foods that you could take safely if you are suffering from Candida. You just have to remember that you need to eat healthy foods in order for you to stay healthy and fit.

WHAT IS THRUSH?

Thrush is a type of superficial yeast Infection. It is technically termed as oropharyngeal candidiasis. Thrush infects the tongue, the inside part of the cheek, the gums and also the inside portions of the lips.

It is more profound and commonplace in the infants but it also affects the toddlers but it is rarely found in older children and grownups.

Its appearance in an adult can often be an indication for some underlying medical causes like diabetics and other diseases.

The underlying cause of thrush infection is the over maturation of the yeast species candida albicans which is found in the areas like the surface of the skin, in the intestine tract and also in the oral cavity. Its occurrence in the newly born infants is within ten days of the time of delivery.

The infection may spread to the mother through the nipples which are involved in the process of breastfeeding. Diaper rash is caused my transfer of the causative microorganisms through the stool. Oral infection may occur in the small babies by transfer through the nipples of the contaminated feeding bottles.

In the adults the infection can be associated with smoking, use of birth control pills, and diseases like diabetics, repetitive use of antibiotics and use of inhalers containing corticosteroids for controlling asthma.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF THRUSH

Thrush can be identified by the following symptoms:

A thick and white coating is developed in the tongue, inside portions of then lips and gums.

Infections caused by candida are generally very bright white in color. Infection may even occur in the inner lips or in the buccal surface.

The infection is very much adherent to the surface and cannot be easily wiped off. Infections in the mother’s nipples are indicated by increased redness of the nipple.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

Diagnosis in done visually of the potentially infected areas and there is no need for laboratory test for the diagnosis of thrush.

There are two broad ways for the treatment.

1. Traditional medication

2. Homeopathic treatment

Regardless of the way one chooses for the treatment the application of the medication to objects like the nipples of feeding bottles or pacifiers or even in the nipple of the mother’s breast can increase the efficiency of the treatment as it reduces the probability of the infant being reinfected with candida.

SELF CARE AT HOME AND PREVENTION REMEDIES

The homeopathic treatment for thrush involves a very simple technique.

Swabbing of the oral area may be done by using pure coconut oil.

Swabbing of the oral area with yogurt and it may be applied to the nipples of the mother breastfeeding their child.

Applying distilled vinegar and dilute baking soda to the mothers nipples.

But application of these techniques have not been scientifically studies or recommended and are purely based on anecdotal reports.

Thrush is caused by the overgrowth or maturation of the microorganism candida albicans and takes places in the oral cavities, inner lips the prevention involves ways to limit the growth of the causative microorganisms and also limiting the chances of reappearance of the candida infection my limiting the exposure to candida.

The nurses should avoid using wet or damp nursing pads.

Oral Candida chances can be lessened by using soaps and water to clean the pacifiers or feeding bottles. People who need daily inhalation i.e. the asthma patients using a spacer when using MDI (metered dose inhaler) and then rinsing and also spitting out the water  following MDI is very effective in the prevention of thrush.

Are You Suffering from Yeast Infection in Men?

Yeast is classified under the kingdom fungi. These are eukaryotic organisms which multiply by mitosis asexually. Sometimes they also reproduce by budding which is not much symmetrical. Yeast has been found to perform various activities and affects human lives in many ways. Starting from alcoholic beverages to spoilage of food, yeast leaves behind many effects. Also, yeast has been found to cause various diseases.

Symptoms of yeast infection in men

Yeast infection in men is also highly common. Its symptoms are to some extent a match to HIV AIDS and many confuse it to be so. However, Candiasis is very different despite showing similar symptoms. Primarily, the three main effects are observed. Oral thrush and vaginitis are common. These are some of the highly harmful and life threatening diseases. This is commonly called yeast infection, oidiomyosis and moniliasis.

Not only oral thrush, it also affects the genital region of men. Some men end up having penile infection and it is very painful. During both heterosexual and homosexual sex this disease can be transferred from person to person. So, one should gather knowledge about this disease in order to protect oneself from it.

This develops from a special type of yeast called candida. It’s most prominent sign appears on the penis and can be diagnosed visually by a general physician.

Also, the foreskin of the penis develops a flaky dryness. This might as well drop a bit.

There might be irritation and itching around the anal region.

Rashes or red spots may appear all over the penis and also the thigh region.

The scrotum or the upper thigh may become a bit reddish.

Prime causes of infection in men

Yeast infection in men is usually caused by the candida type of yeast, but there are also a few hygienic or other practices which catalyse their growth. Diabetic patient suffer from this. Because of high amount of sugar flowing through the penis region, bacteria and yeast are able to grow.

The presence of HIV virus, improper thyroid gland secretion and also chronic stress can lower the immunity level. This is when yeast attacks and one can develop infection.

This can also be transferred by sexual method. It is counted as a sexually transmitted disease (STD). A man can develop this after having sex with a women already carrying vaginal yeast infection.

Continual masturbation can also cause this to happen.

Poor personal hygiene and use of low quality condoms can also quicken the growth of yeast.

So, we find that yeast infection in men is caused by various reasons.

Why and how to treat yeast infection in men

Men should take proper care of their personal hygiene. There are various home remedies to treat male yeast infection. However, one should always take the help of professionals like doctors for the cure of this.
