Things You Should Know About Candidiasis
Yeast is a type of fungi, which is considered to produce a lot of desired and undesired effects. Thus, yeast affects every day human life a lot. One very prominent disease caused by yeast is candidiasis.
The Candida species of yeast causes certain infection commonly called thrush or Candidiasis. Oidiomycosis, Moniliasis and candidosis are various terms used to refer to Candidiasis.
Candidiasis includes infections that occur around the mouth, vagina and penis region. So, Candidiasis includes various chronic diseases like vaginitis. This disease can cause just some superficial infections and it can also become life threatening at times.
These infections occur around the mouth and nose causing irritation and pain. So, one needs to have sound knowledge about this disease and how to fight it.
Causes of Candidiasis
The yeast of Candida category is the actual cause of this disease. However, the growth of this yeast and its infection is somehow monitored by the immune system and the competition between different microorganisms.
Excess use of detergents in clothes and hormonal imbalance promotes the growth of such yeasts in and around the genital region. Use of contraceptive pills, pregnancy and sexual act make the genital area highly vulnerable to yeast infection.
Improper cleansing before and after vaginal or anal sex, can cause the growth of yeast around the genital region. This is because of the flow of fluids making the area prone to bacterial and fungal attacks.
Some people have a weak immune system; this is also a cause of Candidiasis. Diabetic people with excess sugar secreting fluids also promote yeast infection. Conditions like cancer, steroid intake and HIV AIDs are ideal conditions for one to grow yeast infection.
Symptoms of Candidiasis
Candidiasis results in itching and irritation around the genitals. Due to vaginitis, irritation occurs across the vagina and around it. Sometimes white patches appear in the tongue and mouth region.
This is more prominent in children who are about 8 years old and below. This is commonly called thrush. Infection of the vulva may also cause soreness and secretion of white coloured fluid.
In men, yeast infection appears as rashes and red spots all around the penis. Also some inflammation and irritation occurs in the foreskin of the penis. Most of these symptoms are treatable using the right drug.
Diagnosis of Candidiasis
Microscopes are sometimes used for diagnosing Candidiasis. Also, culturing is another way to observe yeast infection and take measure.
A small portion of the infected region is taken on a sterilized glass slide. It is stained well, and is put under microscope. Then, it is observed.
For culturing method, some microbes are collected in a swab from the infected region. It is then incubated at 37 degrees and is observed for yeast activity.
Treatment of Candidiasis
An antifungal is needed to be used to fight Candidiasis. Antimycotic a tropical clotrimazole, fluconazole, nystatin are used for the treatment of candidiasis. Infections in different areas need different dosing. In cases of severe infections, drugs like caspofungin or voriconazole are used.
Candidiasis has been observed to happen from long ago. It is highly communicable and can be life threatening. So, it needs to be cured as soon as possible under the able guidance of a doctor.
