WHAT IS THRUSH?
Thrush is a type of superficial yeast Infection. It is technically termed as oropharyngeal candidiasis. Thrush infects the tongue, the inside part of the cheek, the gums and also the inside portions of the lips.
It is more profound and commonplace in the infants but it also affects the toddlers but it is rarely found in older children and grownups.
Its appearance in an adult can often be an indication for some underlying medical causes like diabetics and other diseases.
The underlying cause of thrush infection is the over maturation of the yeast species candida albicans which is found in the areas like the surface of the skin, in the intestine tract and also in the oral cavity. Its occurrence in the newly born infants is within ten days of the time of delivery.
The infection may spread to the mother through the nipples which are involved in the process of breastfeeding. Diaper rash is caused my transfer of the causative microorganisms through the stool. Oral infection may occur in the small babies by transfer through the nipples of the contaminated feeding bottles.
In the adults the infection can be associated with smoking, use of birth control pills, and diseases like diabetics, repetitive use of antibiotics and use of inhalers containing corticosteroids for controlling asthma.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF THRUSH
Thrush can be identified by the following symptoms:
A thick and white coating is developed in the tongue, inside portions of then lips and gums.
Infections caused by candida are generally very bright white in color. Infection may even occur in the inner lips or in the buccal surface.
The infection is very much adherent to the surface and cannot be easily wiped off. Infections in the mother’s nipples are indicated by increased redness of the nipple.
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
Diagnosis in done visually of the potentially infected areas and there is no need for laboratory test for the diagnosis of thrush.
There are two broad ways for the treatment.
1. Traditional medication
2. Homeopathic treatment
Regardless of the way one chooses for the treatment the application of the medication to objects like the nipples of feeding bottles or pacifiers or even in the nipple of the mother’s breast can increase the efficiency of the treatment as it reduces the probability of the infant being reinfected with candida.
SELF CARE AT HOME AND PREVENTION REMEDIES

But application of these techniques have not been scientifically studies or recommended and are purely based on anecdotal reports.
Thrush is caused by the overgrowth or maturation of the microorganism candida albicans and takes places in the oral cavities, inner lips the prevention involves ways to limit the growth of the causative microorganisms and also limiting the chances of reappearance of the candida infection my limiting the exposure to candida.
The nurses should avoid using wet or damp nursing pads.
Oral Candida chances can be lessened by using soaps and water to clean the pacifiers or feeding bottles.
